Sample Lesson Plans and Resources for Elementary Age Students

Teacher and studentsThese lesson plans are designed to be used in parish religious education programs and in Catholic elementary schools. We encourage local educators to adapt them or to create their own resources to share the message of Faithful Citizenship.

The following six sample sessions correspond to the Adult/Small Faith Community Sessions. One option is to make the sessions intergenerational where families and individuals of all ages gather for prayer and then break out into age appropriate groups. Or, these sessions can be done independently as part of a more traditional catechetical setting or in a Catholic school classroom.

  1. Lesson Plan A: Faithful Citizenship
  2. Lesson Plan B: Forming Consciences
  3. Lesson Plan C: Avoiding Evil and Doing Good
  4. Lesson Plan D: Life and Dignity of the Human Person
  5. Lesson Plan E: Solidarity
  6. Lesson Plan F: Option for the Poor and Vulnerable

The following two activities provide examples of creative, experiential activities designed to help students understand key principles of Catholic social teaching that shape our approach to citizenship.

  1. Activity A: Justice, Fairness, and Changing the Rules-Candy Game
  2. Activity B: Poverty and Justice-Bean Game
